Recipe Box overview
My Allrecipes contains a personal online Recipe Box where you can store recipes from our site, add recipes from your own
collection, categorize recipes, add private notes to recipes, rate and review recipes for everyone to read, create a
personalized shopping list, and more!
Deleting a recipe from your Recipe Box
On the recipe listing line, select the recipe or recipes you wish to delete by clicking on the box to the left of the
recipe. Click on the Delete Checked Items bar in the lower right-hand corner of the page. This will move the checked
recipes into the trash can. You can make the final delete from your trash can.
Restoring a recipe from the trash can
To restore a recipe from your trash can, select the recipe in your trash can and click Restore Checked Items. You
can also restore multiple recipes by selecting more than one recipe.
Adding recipes to your Recipe Box
You must be logged into your Allrecipes.com account to save a recipe to your recipe box. Open the page of the recipe you
want to add to your Recipe Box, and click the Save to Recipe Box button to the right of the recipe description. You
can add the recipe to a specific folder (such as a muffin recipe to your Baking folder), or save it as an uncategorized
recipe.
Categorizing recipes in your Recipe Box
Categorizing your recipes allows you to place your recipes into categories you create yourself. You can categorize recipes
as you save them to your Recipe Box: select a category from the Add to Recipe Box Folder drop-down list, and click
Save. You can also categorize the recipes already in your Recipe Box. Select the recipe or recipes you want to
categorize, choose a folder from the drop-down list at the bottom of the page, and click on the Go button.
Adding category folders to your Recipe Box
- Click on the Recipe Box tab.
- Click Create New Folders on the left side under the View menu. Here you can select from four ready-made folder
combinations. You can add one combo or all of them.
- Click the Add These Folders button under the folders you want to add.
You can also create custom folders for your Recipe Box. In the Create Your Own Folder box, on the upper right side, enter
the name of your new folder, select the folder location, and click the Add Folder button.
View entire Recipe Box recipe list
To view your entire recipe list, click All Items from the View box on the Recipe Box page. This page view will
show up to 17 recipes, and you can view more recipes by clicking on the page numbers in the lower right-hand corner.
Changing the list view
Your recipe box can sort recipes alphabetically, by rating and by date added. Change the listing by clicking on the
category above that column. Each time you click on a new heading, it sorts the list.
Recipe notes
A recipe note is a private note on a recipe (reviews are public). Once you are logged in to your Recipe Box, you can add a
recipe note. The Add a Personal Note link can be found on the right-hand side of the recipe pages.
Managing your notes
You can add, view and edit personal notes to a recipe by clicking on the More Info link just to the right of the recipe
listing line in your Recipe Box.
- Log in to My Allrecipes with your user name and password.
- Open the Recipe Box tab.
- Click on More Info to the right of a recipe to add, view, or edit notes.
- Follow the prompts to view, create, or edit a note.
Your recipe note will not appear directly on the recipe page in your Recipe Box; you will have to click on the More Info
link to view notes. The Advanced Print Option allows you to print your notes along with each recipe.
Adding private recipes
Any recipe—one of your own, or one from a magazine or cookbook—can be saved and displayed in your Recipe Box.
Once you have entered and saved a private recipe, you can print it out or email it to a friend. (Your private recipes will
print without advertisements.) You can also add notes to private recipes and rate/review them too.
To add private recipes to your Recipe Box:
- Open your Recipe Box and click on the Private Recipes navigational tab.
- Click Add a New Recipe in the upper right-hand corner.
- Enter your recipe information in the fields provided.
- Title, ingredients and directions are required and marked by a red asterisk.
To enter the ingredients, use one line per ingredient.
When you enter directions, do not number the steps: each line will be automatically numbered for you. Please use one line per
step.
Once you have finished entering all your information, select a folder location and click on Save Recipes.
Please note: Private recipes are not connected to our database. Therefore, they cannot be added to the Recipe Clipboard or
Shopping List, and Advanced Print options, scaling and nutrition information are not available for private recipes.
Adding web links and references
The web links and reference tabs located in the Recipe Box allow you to save other pertinent cooking information. A web
link is a URL address to another website that contains information you want to save in your Recipe Box, such as cooking
advice. A reference is an online catalog that you can create for your favorite recipes from books and magazines.
To add a web link or a reference, open your Recipe Box and click on either the Web Links or References tab. To add a web link,
click on Add a Web Link. You will need to complete the Add a Web Link to my Recipe Box form to add a non-Allrecipes web page
to your Recipe Box. Enter the title for the page and the web address (URL)—the best way to enter a URL is to copy and
paste it directly into the form. Select the page type and the folder in which to store the link. Saved web links can be
accessed in the Recipe Box and from the Web Links tab. The Advanced Save option allows you to add up to five web links to your
Recipe Box at one time.
To add a reference, click Add a New Reference. You will need to complete the form to add a recipe reference to your Recipe
Box. Enter the recipe title, reference type, location, page number, and where the reference will be stored. The Advanced Save
option allows you to add up to five references to your Recipe Box at one time.
Recipe Search
You can find recipes stored in your Recipe Box by using the Search box above the recipe listing. You can search for recipes
by keyword or by title, but not by ingredient. For example, a search for “lasagna” would return all the lasagna
recipes in your Recipe Box.

Access problems: Proxy
If you are experiencing problems with our pages and your cookies are enabled, it is possible that your internet service
provider or your internet browser is using proxy servers. If someone using your ISP views a page, a copy of that page is
stored. Then every time anyone using your ISP asks for that page, the server sends the copy, which can eventually result in an
error message or old pages being stored. A typical error message is, “The page you are trying to view has expired.”
To disable the proxy server (Off) in Internet Explorer 5.X - 6.0
- Open Internet Explorer. From the Menu bar, select Tools > Internet Options > Connections.
- Click the LAN Settings button in the lower right corner.
- Uncheck the Automatically Detect, Automatic Configuration, and Proxy Server setting options.
- Click OK.
- Click Apply, if available.
- Click OK.
- Click the Refresh button in your browser.
To disable the proxy server (Off) in Netscape 8.0:
- Open Netscape. From the Menu bar, select Tools > Options.
- Click on the General button at the top left of the Options box.
- Towards the bottom, under Connection, click the Connection Settings button.
- Select Direct Connection to the Internet.
- Click OK.
Access problems: clearing cache
If you are experiencing page loading problems, you need to try clearing your temporary internet files or cache.
- In your browser, click on Tools.
- Select Internet Options. The temporary internet files should be on the first screen in the General area.
- Click on the button to Delete Temporary Internet Files (not the cookies). This will clear up files that may be clogging up
your computer.
Access problems: old pages
If you are viewing old pages, you need to reset your computer to pull up the most recent version of web pages:
- From the Menu bar, select Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files
- Click on Settings.
- Select the option to Check for Newer Versions of the Page
- Set it to Every Visit to Page.
- Click OK.
